Well, what a week! We ended up on the front pages of two regional newspapers earlier this week, the Lancashire Telegraph and rather strangely, the Liverpool Echo.
This was triggered by a photographer unexpectedly coming into school last week to take pictures of any recent good news story. We told him about our sandwich boards and how the school council had been actively discouraging motorists from parking poorly or illegally.
This story was clearly something the two newspapers latched on to, and somehow I ended up being described as 'a fed up headteacher'! I actually was very complimentary about how parking was improving, and that school didn't want to reduce available parking for residents, parents or staff, rather, we wanted crossing places and a 20mph speed limit in the area.
Following the newspaper articles, ITV Granada contacted school, as did That's Lancashire. They both came to school today to film the school council walking up and down with the no parking zone boards and to interview myself.
The Granada item will be from 6pm this evening, the That's Lancashire piece will be from 5.30pm onwards, repeated quite a number of times apparently. That's Lancashire also have a close relationship with the BBC, so if it's a really slow news day, it may appear on BBC1 after 6.30pm.
It's a good news story for school, especially considering the appalling statistics which have just been published which put Blackburn with Darwen 3rd worst in the country for road safety.
